Victorian horseman Darren Weir has pulled off a training master coup with Wealth Princess winning at Doomben and he is adamant the best is yet to come from the mare.
Wealth Princess returned to the winners’ circle for the first time in two years when she produced a sizzling performance to win Saturday’s $150,000 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m).
It was Wealth Princess’s second win in the Group Three feature following her 2010 victory and Weir said the injury-plagued mare would now be aimed at Group One glory in either the Stradbroke Handicap on June 9 or the Tattersall’s Tiara two weeks later.
“She’s a brilliant mare and it’s great to see her back in the winners’ circle”, Weir said.
“She’s had a great grounding and all the hard work is done. We just have to maintain her fitness now and keep her sound with plenty of beach work.
“She’ll start next in the Dane Ripper on June 2 and then we’ll decide on a Stradbroke start.”
Michael Walker produced a confident ride on Wealth Princess ($2.50) and she exploded when he asked her to sprint in the straight to score a length-and-a-half win.
Mornington mare Sophies Spirit ($6) ran boldly after setting the speed to hold down second with Gold Coast galloper Alltherightmoves ($7) another half length third.
Walker has developed an affinity with Wealth Princess and he praised Weir’s training prowess to get the mare back to winning form.
“I love this mare. I actually pray for her to stay sound every night,” Walker said.
“She’s only 70 per cent fit but she’s so focused in the mind and when she races like that she’ll be hard to beat in any race she contests.
“I can’t praise Darren enough. He has done a remarkable job in getting her back to the racecourse and back to winning form.”
